The Mediterranean Diet has moderate amounts of fat. It is more effective than low fat diets in preventing heart disease. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to decrease mortality from all causes, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. It is a plant based diet with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, legumes and low fat dairy. Unlike the standard American diet (SAD), the Mediterranean diet has little red meat or sweets.
